Brief History of Westampton Memorial Post 509. In August of 1977 several Veterans residing in Westampton Township met with Retired Army Colonel Curtis S. J. Wilson to discuss the forming of an American Legion Post in Westampton Township. The need for a community oriented Veteran organization was evident. And to satisfy that need a meeting was planned with a representative of the Burlington County Executive Committee.  In October of 1977 a meeting was held in Westampton Township at the Villa Di Roma Restaurant to form a Post. The Burlington County Executives and the 17 Veterans present selected the officers necessary   to start the Post.. Thus, the Post was organized. This Post was duly recognized and chartered as Westampton Memorial American Legion Post 509, Department of New Jersey, on November 21, 1977. The final act of our Post was to elect a Post Commander and a staff of officers for the ensuring year. The following Legionaries have been elected Commander of this Post. Post 509 has grown from 17  members to 169 its present membership is over 200. The Post has participated in all functions of the American Legion at the National, Department, County and Community levels. Through the years we have sponsored Easter Egg Hunts at the Holly Hill School, a Little League Baseball Team in Mount Holly, Safety Essay Contests, and presented awards to the outstanding students of the Westampton Schools System. Further, we sponsor Coloring Contest, an Indoor Soccer Team with the Westampton Recreation Department and send boys to Jersey Boys State program At Rider University, Lawernceville, New Jersey, Present awards to R.O.T.C. Students at Rancocas Valley High School.
